POSITION DESCRIPTION
PROFESSOR, THE ST. ANDREW’S HALL CHAIR OF STUDIES IN THE REFORMED TRADTION
St. Andrew’s Hall, a theological college of The Presbyterian Church in Canada located on the campus of the University of British Columbia, is seeking a professor to fill the newly established Chair for Studies in the Reformed Tradition. The occupant of this chair must display notable expertise in either Reformation History or Reformed Theology.
Responsibilities
- A full course load for this position will be considered to be five courses annually.
- The professor will be expected to teach two or three courses in St. Andrew’s Hall’s historic partner, the Vancouver School of Theology.
- The services of the professor will be offered to the other theological colleges on the campus of the University of British Columbia and, if appropriate, to the University of British Columbia, to fill out the course load.
- The professor must be willing to teach in non-traditional formats such as intensive courses or by distance education.
- The professor may be invited to supervise graduate theological students.
- This is also a research position and the professor will be expected to offer her/his scholarship to the wider church and academy through publication and public speaking or other forms of leadership.
- The professor will be expected to participate in the worship life of St. Andrew’s Hall and to share in the task of mentoring Presbyterian theological students.
- The professor will be expected to take part in the life of a local congregation, the presbytery, and the wider church.
- Some minor committee responsibilities may be required of the professor at the discretion of the Dean of St. Andrew’s Hall. This is, however, a teaching and research position rather than an administrative one.
Qualifications
- It is expected that the professor will hold the PhD degree or its equivalent.
- The professor must have a critical love for the Reformed Tradition and be able to help Presbyterian and other students to understand and to interpret its central emphases in light of contemporary realities. The professor will also be able to place the Reformed Tradition within the context of, and to teach some courses in, the wider Christian Tradition.
- The successful candidate must be able to flourish in an ecumenical and university setting.
- The candidate must be or become a minister or member of The Presbyterian Church in Canada in good standing.
- Familiarity with the history and ethos of The Presbyterian Church in Canada is also desirable.
Terms of Appointment
- This is a tenure track position. An initial appointment will be for a three year term, renewable for a further three year term. Review for tenure would normally take place in the fifth year of an appointment.
- A senior scholar could receive tenure, held within St. Andrew’s Hall, at the time of initial appointment.
- Compensation and academic rank will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience.
- Compensation will normally be determined according to the Executive and Professorial Stipend Grid of The Presbyterian Church in Canada.
- Adjunct or cross-appointments to other theological colleges on the campus of the University of British Columbia may also be possible.
Accountability
- The professor will be responsible to the Board of St. Andrew’s Hall and will report directly to the Dean of St. Andrew’s Hall.
- With respect to teaching performance, the professor will also be accountable to Deans or other supervisory officials of the colleges in which she or he will teach.
- If the successful candidate is a minister, s/he will become a member of Westminster or Western Han-Ca Presbytery.
- The successful candidate will be subject to denominational regulations such as participation ion a Boundaries Workshop.
