Remembering Hans Kouwenberg
With heavy hearts the St. Andrew’s Hall community marks the death and celebrates the life of Rev. Dr. Hans Kouwenberg who died on June 10 after a long and brave battle with cancer. Dr. Kouwenberg’s exemplary ministry as a whole has been recognized in various ways including his election as Moderator of the 133rd General Assembly. While still minister of his final pastoral charge, Calvin Church, Abbotsford, Dr. Kouwenberg, served on the Board of St. Andrew’s Hall, the Board of VST, the Advisory Committee of the Elders’ Institute as its initial convener and, finally, from 2003-2009 as convener of the Board of St. Andrew’s Hall. He also served as Interim Co-Dean of St. Andrew’s Hall, together with the late Rev. Dr. Thomas Gemmell, for most of the interim before the arrival of Dr. Stephen Farris in 2003. In 2011 Dr. Kouwenberg agreed to accept an appointment to the position of Director of Denominational Formation where he taught all Presbyterian candidates for ministry in or connected with VST and strongly influenced their formation as ministers. He was a vigorous, engaged and helpful colleague both at St. Andrew’s Hall and at VST. In retirement these past few years Dr. Kouwenberg and his wife Colleen have continued to bless SAH in many ways, including the provision of an award in their name for a graduating Presbyterian student from VST. SAH Professor and incoming Dean Dr. Ross Lockhart said of Dr. Kouwenberg, “We give God thanks for Hans’ work and witness for the gospel. I was always touched by his passion for the Lord and his kindness to others, including me. He will be greatly missed and gratefully remembered. Well done, good and faithful servant.” Memorial details will be forthcoming from the family and Calvin Presbyterian Church in Abbotsford.
